About Fotostax
Fotostax is a company who are redefining the way you capture moments. Their upcoming product the fotostax Motion™ turns your smartphone into an instant print camera for 3D and motion photos, changing the way we connect and share memories.
Objective
Fotostax is developing a mobile app that connects the phone camera with the printer hardware. It enables users to capture and print 3D, motion, flip, and still photos directly from their gallery or camera. The app should also include features like cartridge tracking, editing capabilities, digital effects, and integration with other apps (e.g. social media integration)
Process
For this project, I used the Double Diamond design process, which is a model developed in 2005 by the British Design Council. It is divided into four phases: discover, define, develop, and deliver.
Discover
User Research
Screener Surveys
User Interviews
Competitor Analysis
Competitor Matrix
Areas for opportunity
Define
User Personas
Empathy Mapping
Journey Mapping

User Flows
Paper Wireframes
Deliver

User Testing
What did we learn from our user research?
Festive or Relaxed
Designing for two distinct groups: those who enjoy busy nightlife, and those who prefer relaxed quality time with family and friends.
Sharing
Emphasis was made on the significance of sharing creations physically or digitally as one of their main motivations.
Simplicity
Users expressed a strong preference for clean, uncluttered apps that offer intuitive usability, simplicity, and easy navigation.
Capabilities
Our user interviews revealed the importance of designing for both beginners and advanced features (e.g. Editing)
Personas
Based on the user research insights I created 2 potential characters who would be our ideal users.
Defined Problem Statement
“Fotostax requires a mobile app for their portable photo printers to enhance user experience, convenience, and accessibility. Without the app, users will be unable to use the printer’s functionality, negatively impacting customer attraction and retention since it would fail to meet current market expectations.”
1
Users can either take a photo or select one from their gallery
2
After the image is taken or selected, the user is then presented with options to apply filters or edit their creation.
3
Upon successful printing, users are able to directly share their creation to a social platform of their choice.
